Braxton College is throwing the Heroes & Villains Costume Extravaganza to raise money for renovations to the antiquated Memorial Library. While attending, Kellan stumbles upon a close family friend standing over a dead body that’s dressed as Dr. Evil. Did one of Maggie’s sisters kill an annoying guest at the Roarke and Daughters Inn or does the victim have a more intimate connection to someone else on campus?
As Kellan helps the school’s president, Ursula, bury a scandalous secret from her past and unearth the identity of her stalker, he unexpectedly encounters a missing member of his own family who’s reappeared after a lengthy absence. When all of the peculiar events around town trace back to the Stoddards, a new family who recently moved to Wharton County, the explosive discovery only offers more confusion.
Between the special flower exhibit that’s made an unplanned stop on campus and strange postcards arriving each week from all around the world, Kellan can’t decide which mystery in his life should take priority. Unfortunately, the biggest one of all has yet to arrive at his doorstep. When it does, Kellan won’t know what hit him.
An Interview With A Character
What is your full name?
Kellan Michael Ayrwick
What is your Profession?
I was an assistant director on a TV show called Dark Reality, an investigative reporting series that re-created crimes in a reality TV format. The producers fired my boss and put the show on a one-year hiatus, so now I’m teaching film and communications courses as an assistant professor at Braxton College in my Pennsylvania hometown.
What is your current favourite book or movie?
Emma had been wanting to watch Charlotte’s Web, but I wouldn’t let her until she read the book. My daughter recently turned seven, so she’s still super into animals. We finished reading the book last week and watched the movie just last night. I cried, I admit it. Wilbur and Charlotte will always have a special place in my heart.
What is your go to comfort book or movie?
For a movie, Defending Your Life. I’m a huge Meryl Streep fan, and this movie addresses so many of the questions I have about life. What’s is all about? How should we treat one another? Is it okay to judge somebody? Do we come back again if we fail to achieve our goals? Are past lives real? I highly recommend it as a film to share with friends one Saturday evening.
For a book, I’m a fan of crime novels and early 20th century mystery fiction. As long as it’s not police procedurals… while they are often well-written, those cops tend to get in my way when I’m solving the crime. Please don’t tell Sheriff April Montague I said that, we’re finally starting to tolerate one another.
If someone was to play you in a movie who would it be? OR what would be the character you would want to be in a book?
Nana D always tells me I remind her of Ryan Gosling. I kinda see the resemblance and think he could probably pull it off if he were to play me in a film. If I were to be the lead character in a book, I’d go with Mikael Blomkvist from Steig Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy. He’s at least a decade older than me, but there’s something about the way he works… we think alike!
What is your ideal evening?
A few years ago, it would’ve been dinner and a movie with my wife. Now, it’s all about my daughter. Cooking a meal, reading a book, assembling puzzles, and taking a walk around Danby Landing, Nana D’s farm and orchard. I love seeing Emma’s reaction to learning something new from a book or nature.
