Stitch Me Deadly (An Embroidery Mystery #2) by Amanda Lee

Marcy Singer owns The Seven Year Stitch, an embroidery specialty shop in the small town of Tallulah Falls, Oregon. Trouble strikes when an elderly woman brings an antique piece of embroidery into the shop-and promptly dies of unnatural causes. Now Marcy has to stitch together clues to catch a crafty killer.

Marcy is back and things are settling down in Tallulah Falls. when one morning (having nipped out for a tea) she sees and elderly woman headed to the Seven Year Stitch, the lady has brought a sampler in to show Marcy but whilst that is happening the lady keels over! Having got the paramedics Marcy hopes she will be okay, only to find out she passed away in hospital, but then they discover that the heart attack was not normal and Marcy is back in the hot seat.

Now Marcy's mother has arrived back and Beverly Singer seems to have caught the eye of one of the relatives of the deceased, there is an investigative reporter sniffing around .... and then there is another death, can Marcy and Beverly (along with Angus the Iris Wolfhound) figure out what is going on and keep Marcy away from orange jumpsuits!

There isn't much to say other than if you are feeling down reach for this and enjoy the antics of a wonderful cartoon dog (along with his friends), well worth it :D

Buried in the Stacks (The Haunted Library Mysteries #3) by Allison Brook

In winter, the Haunted Library is a refuge for homeless townspeople. When a group purchases a vacant house to establish a daytime haven for the homeless, Carrie offers the library as a meeting place for the Haven House committee, but quickly learns that it may be used for illegal activities.

As the new Sunshine Delegate, Carrie heads to the hospital to visit her cantankerous colleague, Dorothy, who had fallen outside the local supermarket. She tells Carrie that her husband tried to kill her—and that he murdered her Aunt Evelyn, the library's resident ghost, six years earlier.

And then Dorothy is murdered—run off the road as soon as she returns to work. Evelyn implores Carrie to find her niece's killer, but that's no easy task: Dorothy had made a hobby of blackmailing her neighbors and colleagues. Carrie, Evelyn, and Smoky Joe the cat are on the case, but are the library cards stacked against them?

Allison Brook has taken a number of the Seven Deadly Sins and bound them together in a tome that is all too readable!

Winter, a time of fun for kids (and the young at heart) but not so much for the homeless of which a few have taken to heading to the library as it is somewhere warm, dry and at least they can read, use the computers etc.  Which is fine when they behave but not all of them do, so when Carrie hears about a new homeless day centre that is being set up (Haven House) she gets ready to join in, after all the library can supply books, DVDs etc that are being removed from circulation and would therefore provide an outlet for the homeless to have some enjoyment.  Whilst all this is starting to happen she also needs to step up and be the Sunshine Delegate for the library (the member of staff who sends cards. flowers etc in the event of serious illness, birth of a baby etc to the member of staff in question), she wasn't expecting her first injured and in hospital to be her nemesis Dorothy! However she gets some flowers and heads to the hospital only to discover that Dorothy seems scared of her husband and insists he tried to kill her. Carrie shrugs it off as being pain killer induced but a couple of weeks later Dorothy is killed by a hit and run driver, and now Dorothy's deceased Aunt Evelyn (the library ghost) want's Carrie to find out the truth, especially when it seems it is linked to her own early demise.

Read it and enjoy is my recommendation!

I LOVE to watch British mystery series on TV, Amazon Prime and Netflix. Some of my favorites are: Grantchester, Silent Witness, Blue Murder, Agatha Raisin, Midsomer Murders.

What is your go to comfort book or movie?

I reread the Golden Age of Mystery authors—Agatha Christie, Josephine Tey, Dorothy Sayers and Ngaio Marsh to name a few.

If someone was to play you in a movie who would it be? OR what would be the character you would want to be in a book?

I love dining out with Dylan Avery, my significant other, at an Italian, Indian or Thai restaurant.

Who Shot the Serif? (Hand Lettering Mystery #1) by Jessa Archer

When Jamie Lang finds one of her hand lettered quotes on the window of her shop, Flourish, with a hole shot through a serif, she knows someone's trying to drive her business into red ink. Jamie confronts Earleen Culp, the ruthless owner of the local stationery shop, in front of the most popular breakfast spot in the small town of Cedar Valley. Of course, Earleen professes shock and innocence, so when she’s found dead in front of Jamie's home the next morning, Jamie becomes the prime suspect.

Jamie's one cross-stroke short of acquittal, and even her best friend has her doubts. But Jamie's not the only one in town with a motive for wanting Earleen silenced for good. To clear her name, Jamie's going to need every last drop of ink in her quill.

With the hot police chief Ridge, and her makeup artist friend Nora on her side, she’s prepared to go out with a flourish if that's what it takes to catch the real murderer. She’s desperate to save her hand lettering business, but will her quest lead her right into a killer’s snare?

This was a mystery that started off slowly but gradually gained momentum until the final showdown!

At first I wasn't sure about this book, but as Jamie has more coffee to kick start her day this also kick started, what started as an annoyance (Earleen trying to stop her business) gets worse with one of her limited edition hand lettered quotes shot and pinned to the door.  Jamie hadn't had enough coffee when she saw Earleen and managed to get into an argument with her, that should have been the end of it, only Jamie trips over Earleen the next day, literally trips over her as she is well and truly dead on Jamie's front door step!

Now with people cancelling orders, being stopped from the Wedding Fair and people calling her a murderer Jamie needs to find out who is framing her so she can go back to framing her quotes! Having said I wasn't sure at the beginning by the end I was thinking about adding the later books to my TBR list!

An Interview With A Character

What is your full name?

Jamie Lang. I'm single, never been married. So there are no former married names to contend with. Just my maiden name. I don't know that I've been given a middle name by my author. If I could choose, I think it would be Annette. Just because I like the way it sounds. If you're listening author—hint, hint!

What is your Profession?

I'm a professional hand letterer and calligrapher. I own a many-faceted small business, which includes my shop, Flourish. Flourish, of course, is named because it's a double entendre—a swoosh, a dash of artistic flair, and to thrive. It's really my life philosophy. I create and sell hand lettered objects both for the shop and online. Things like framed prints, mugs, kitchen towels, and postcards. A huge part of my business is lettering and calligraphy for weddings—invitations, signs, save-the-dates, place cards, anything with writing on it. I enjoy teaching and sparking the creative side in others so I give online tutorials and offer classes at my shop. Hand lettering really is more art than writing and it's all about community, which is why I love it so much. 

What is your current favourite book or movie?

Michael R. Sull.

I know. Not what you'd expect. Michael R. Sull is a master penman. If I could write half as well as he does, I'd be over the moon. 

What is your go to comfort book or movie?

It's a few years old, but I love The Decoy Bride. It's just a fun little romcom that gives me a laugh, especially because I hand letter for so many weddings and have so much interaction with brides.

If someone was to play you in a movie who would it be? OR what would be the character you would want to be in a book?

They say never mention who you would like to play you in a movie because you'll scare the other actors away, should it ever happen. So I really don't like to say. There are so many wonderful actors who could do me justice. As for books, when I retire, which is years in the future, I'd like to be someone like an American Miss Marple and just live here in my small town of Cedar Valley inconspicuously solving crimes.

What is your ideal evening?

Every month I hold a wine and hand lettering night at Flourish. That's my ideal evening. Creating art. Inspiring others. And an evening spent with my friends and new acquaintances.

The Wedding Shawl (Seaside Knitters Society Mystery #5) by Sally Goldenbaum

A wedding should be a joyous occasion with the only tears being tears of happiness, but not when a cold case becomes a current murder case.

This book opens with the discussion of a local cold case, Harmony Farmer went missing on the night of her high school prom, only to be discovered drowned the next day, the case was never solved but Danny is using the case as an example of how a cold case can become the basis for a book (not maybe the whole thing, but taking a part of it and twisting it to fit the writing), that should have been the end of it, only a few days later Harmony's best friend is found murdered.  Co-incidence? the police don't think so and neither to the Seaside Knitters one problem being that a good friend didn't have an alibi for the first death, nor for this latest one! Izzy, Nell, Birdie and Cass are sure that Andy has nothing to do with either death - but someone seems determined to make it look as though he does, now the Seaside Knitters and the Police of Cape Anne need to figure out who is a double killer so that Izzy and Sam's wedding doesn't have the cloud of murder hanging over it!

Apples and Alibis (Down South Café Mystery #4) by Gayle Leeson

Gayle Leeson has crafted another tale of misdirection and murder!

Amy Flowers has agreed to run a Farmers' Market on her parking area for a few weeks (well Saturdays at any rate!), this means the parking lot is full, her cafe is swamped and she and her staff are shattered! In the midst of this she takes a phone call from a frantic elderly lady who needs some food for a small gathering the next day, against her better judgement Amy agrees to this (meaning less time to get ready for a meal with her boyfriend Ryan and his mother), but when she and Jackie arrive at the house there is no answer, they go to the back of the house only the find the owner slumped over the kitchen table!  Mrs Pridemore luckily was alive when they arrived but unfortunately she died later that day in hospital.  The problem is she turns out not to have had a stroke or heart attack and now Amy is going against every one else to try and find out the truth.

A Curio Killing (Keepsake Cove Mystery #3) by Mary Ellen Hughes

Callie Reed is looking forward to her first Keepsake Cove spring festival. But her excitement dims considerably when she learns that her ex-boyfriend, Hank, will be performing with one of the hired country-western bands. An Interview With A Character

What is your full name?

Callie Reed.  Only a very few people know that Callie is short for Calliope, who was the Greek goddess of music. My father’s side of the family was really big into music.

What is your Profession?

I inherited and run House of Melody from my Aunt Melodie Reed. It’s a collectible music box shop located in Keepsake Cove, a town of quaint, collectible shops, each one different. One special music box is not for sale: it was my Grandfather Reed’s favorite. I sometimes think my Aunt Melodie is sending me messages through that music box – hints that I’m on the right track with my sleuthing or sometimes a warning. But I’m not 100% sure about that.

What is your current favourite book or movie?

I love all the old Agatha Christie movies. My favorites are the Miss Marples, played by Joan Hickson.

What is your go to comfort book or movie?

For a complete get-away and change of scene, I’ll choose a Jane Austen novel.  

If someone was to play you in a movie who would it be? OR what would be the character you would want to be in a book?

It’d be fun to see Rosamund Pike play me. She’s done such a variety of roles, I’m sure she could handle a music box shop proprietor who tends to get into life-threatening situations and maybe has a ghost looking over her shoulder. I’d also enjoy pretending I looked as gorgeous as she does on the screen.

What is your ideal evening?

After a busy day at the shop—or sleuthing—I love to kick back with a mug of tea and my cat, Jagger, snuggled next to me to watch a little mindless TV. But if Brian happened to call with a last minute suggestion for a bike ride along the quieter roads outside of Keepsake Cove,  I could definitely be talked into it.

You Cannoli Die Once (Italian Restaurant Mystery #1) by Shelley Costa

At Miracolo Northern Italian restaurant, one can savor brilliantly seasoned veal saltimbocca, or luscious risotto alla milanese, but no cannoli. Never cannoli. Maria Pia Angelotta, the spirited seventy-six-year-old owner of the Philadelphia-area eatery that’s been in her family for four generations, has butted heads with her head chef over the cannoli ban more than once. And when the head chef is your own granddaughter, things can get a little heated.

Fortunately, Eve Angelotta knows how to handle what her nonna dishes out. But when Maria Pia’s boyfriend is found dead in Miracolo’s kitchen, bludgeoned by a marble mortar, the question arises: Can a woman this fiery and stubborn over cream-filled pastry be capable of murder?

The police seem to think so, and they put the elder Angelotta behind bars, while Eve, sexy neighborhood attorney Joe Beck, and the entire Miracolo family— parenti di sangue and otherwise—try every trick in the cookbook to unravel a tangle of lies and expose a killer.

Frankly if I wasn't wanting to finish this for the round of Cozy Bingo this would have gone on the abandoned list! The characters were caricatures, I guessed the murderer almost straight off and .... well there are other restaurant/family books I would prefer to spend my time on :(

Chronic Pain The Drug-Free Way by Phil Sizer

 

Chronic pain affects nearly half the UK population - 43%, or a staggering 28 million people. Chronic pain is defined as any pain that continues for longer than three months. It has a variety of causes including arthritis, back pain, fibromyalgia, accidents or operations, although sometimes there is no apparent cause.

Self-management is an important approach to coping better and managing this long term condition. Written with humour, and making use of cartoons and line drawings, this book encapsulates 20 years of pain management courses given by Phil Sizer at Pain Association Scotland to patients, GPs, and other health professionals. Divided into three sections (Understanding, Managing, Coping) Its approach is based on a holistic, bio-psycho-social model of health including CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), positive psychology, relaxation, hypnotherapy, motivational interviewing and coaching.

Well recommended for any one with a chronic condition/pain and indeed for their nearest and dearest! It isn't telling you to stop taking the drugs prescribed, what it is doing is giving you ideas on how to live with the pain and work around it to still give you a decent life!

Mulberry Mischief (A Berry Basket Mystery #4) by Sharon Farrow

An Interview With A Character

What is your full name?

Marlee Angela Jacob. I have a Dutch surname since my father’s family emigrated from Holland in the 19th century. My middle name honors my mom’s side of the family, along with my lovable “Nana” Angela Rossi. However, blame my English professor mother for my first name. A lover of Dickens, she was rereading A Christmas Carol when she went into Labor on Christmas Eve and whimsically decided to name me after Ebenezer Scrooge’s business partner. There are times I think she regrets her decision, but she’d never admit it.

What is your Profession?

Former TV producer of cooking shows for the Gourmet Living Network in NYC. I found myself in the Big Apple when I attended New York University as a marketing major. My return to Michigan was put on hold when a number of job opportunities came my way after graduation, including several successful years at the Gourmet Living Network. That came to a halt when one of the celebrity chefs on a show I produced decided to murder her husband. After a lurid murder trial, I decided it was time to move back to Oriole Point, Michigan where I opened up The Berry Basket. Because this part of coastal west Michigan is known as a fruit belt, a berry-themed emporium seemed the perfect choice. Besides, I LOVE berries.

What is your current favourite book or movie?

My fellow shopkeeper Denise Redfern and I never miss a super-hero movie. Wonder Woman is my current favorite. Saw it four times at the theater, and many times on dvd. May Wonder Woman – and Gal Gadot – live forever.

My current favorite book is: 

Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians trilogy. The books are even funnier and more entertaining than the movie. And who knew rich people were this rich!!

What is your go to comfort book or movie?

I spent years producing cooking shows, which turned me into a huge admirer of Julia Child. I also love Meryl Streep so Julie and Julia is the perfect cinematic storm for me. 

As for comfort books, I’d have to say the entire Harry Potter series. I grew up waiting at bookstores at midnight (with my mother) when the latest Harry Potter novel was released. I’ve read them all many times, especially Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

If someone was to play you in a movie who would it be? OR what would be the character you would want to be in a book?

A 30-year-old Sandra Bullock. And I’d love to be Alice in the Twilight books. Alice is stylish, powerful, vivacious, pretty, and gifted. Also she’s a member of the Cullen family, my favorite family in fiction.

What is your ideal evening?

Pizza with friends while we sit in my Adirondack chairs overlooking Lake Michigan and watch the sunset.
