It’s Halloween, and excitement is brewing in Braxton to carve jack-o’-lanterns, go on haunted hayrides, and race through the spooky corn maze at the Fall Festival.
Despite the former occupant’s warnings, Kellan renovates and moves into a mysterious old house. When a ruthless ghost promises retribution, our fearless professor turns to the eccentric town historian and an eerie psychic to communicate with the apparition. Meanwhile, construction workers discover a fifty-year-old skeleton after breaking ground on the new Memorial Library wing.
While Kellan and April dance around the chemistry sparking between them, a suspicious accident occurs at the Fall Festival. Soon, Kellan discovers the true history and dastardly connections of the Grey family. But can he capture the elusive killer - and placate the revenge-seeking ghost.
Character Guest Post – Madam Zenya
I’m thrilled to be a coveted stop at A Wytch’s Book Review Blog on the tour for Haunted House Ghost. This is going to be a tricky post, but I’ll do my best to walk the fine line of telling you who I am without giving away too much about the story. Kellan Ayrwick, the main character, and I have become fast friends these last few weeks, and I’m intrigued to see where this relationship might go in the future. Let me introduce myself. My name is Madam Zenya, and I’ve been hired to appear during the two-week Fall Festival being thrown in Wharton County this Halloween season.
I’m a psychic medium by trade, famous for my unparalleled ability to provide predictions and premonitions about the future. I’ve also been known to conjure up a few people we’ve lost in yesteryear. While I can’t see who killed them, I often know the path the victim took before the lights went dark. Tragically dark. Permanently dark. Between the alluring séances I hold and the scary readings I offer, Kellan knows he needs my services to figure out what’s going on with the ghost in house he’s purchased and begun to renovate. But when he finds another murder victim, that’s when my role becomes all the more essential.
I always wear a headdress that covers my entire face, so you do not know what I look like. It provides the perfect amount of intrigue and mystery, ensuring my patrons and believers understand I am the real deal. Nothing about me is ordinary, as you will come to know in this tale. Let’s get to the interesting bits, shall we? Autumn in Wharton County is perhaps the most perfect place on earth. Townspeople flock to the annual festival, keen to sample authentic horse drawn carriage hayrides, spooky corn mazes, and the macabre haunted house tours. Watching your waistline is not going to happen when you visit this spectacular event. Between Nana D’s pumpkin pies, the divine apple cider beverages, and the maple-flavored treats, you will undoubtedly find yourself in heaven much sooner than you expected.
For me, there are many revelations I chose not to share with Kellan. As a fortune teller, it is important I only share the necessary fragments of information that my listeners can handle. Had I told Kellan who was the last to see Prudence Grey alive, he might’ve misunderstood who and how she was killed. If I’d revealed the identity of his mystery ghost, Kellan would’ve taken the wrong path to stopping his stalker. In my line of work, I need to understand everything about my customer, or the gifts I possess will not properly reach their audience. What good am I if I cannot lead you to the solution through your own innate talents and abilities?
All is not as it seems this autumn season, especially at Braxton College. Fifty years ago, the lives of many citizens were altered because one person refused to accept the truth. The Grey family is powerful. You do not reckon with such evil until you are truly prepared for the consequences. I tried to teach Kellan these lessons, but only time will tell if he is capable of following my instructions. For now, we must sit back and trust in our hero. The ghost appearing in his house is connected to the skeleton he finds on campus. How and why don’t really matter as much as what he does with the information he finds out. If Kellan acts too quickly, the wrong person will go to prison for a crime (s)he might not have committed. If he doesn’t act soon enough, Kellan’s life might end sooner than he anticipated. What would Emma do then?
It was a complicated time back in 1968. There were Vietnam War protests. A clever lawyer had hopes of becoming a county judge. A young ingénue fell for the wrong man. A horrific fire claimed at least one life… but it will not be the only one in connection with this half-century disaster. The only thing worse, which I struggled over revealing, even in the very end, was whether to tell Kellan the truth about what might happen after he solves this investigation. His own life is destined for trouble. Winter is coming… and Game of Thrones cannot compare to the misfortune brewing in Wharton County.
I hope we meet again soon, fair reader. Truthfully, I’ve already foreseen whether that will happen. Do you dare try to get me to confess the truth?
