Lady Dunbridge was not about to let a little thing like the death of her husband ruin her social life. She's come to New York City, ready to take the dazzling world of Gilded Age Manhattan by storm. The social events of the summer have been amusing but Lady Phil is searching for more excitement---and she finds it, when an early morning visitor arrives, begging for her help. After all, Lady Phil has been known to be useful in a crisis. Especially when the crisis involves the untimely death of a handsome young business tycoon.
His death could send another financial panic through Wall Street and beyond.
With the elegant Plaza Hotel, Metropolitan Museum of Art and the opulent mansions of Long Island's Gold Coast as the backdrop, romance, murder, and scandals abound. Someone simply must do something. And Lady Dunbridge is happy to oblige.
An Interview With A Character
What is your full name?
My mistress calls me Lily. I have another name but I’ve done my best to forget it. Now I am Lily and I work for the Countess of Dunbridge. She found me trying to stowaway on a ship to America and bought my passage. Now we live at the Plaza Hotel in New York City which they just finished this year, 1907, in time to move into one of the first apartments there.. I would protect her with my life.
What is your Profession?
I’m a ladies maid, but not what you normally think of, I do have a uniform for when I need to look like a ladies maid, but often I have to dress in “mufti” which means regular street clothes, when we’re traveling incognito, or chasing a criminal and need to be able to move stealthily and quickly.
What is your current favourite book or movie?
I don’t have much time for reading, but I just discovered what they call Dime Novels. They’re sold at the newsstands on the street corners , and they’re ever so exciting. I like the adventure and crime ones, not the ones about working girls finding love. They’re silly. When I read about heroes doing amazing things, I know I can, too.
What is your go to comfort book or movie?
Well, we don’t really have what you would call movies. We do have the Nickelodeons, they cost five cents to go in and Mr. Preswick, (he’s Lady Phil’s butler) and I sometimes go to watch the moving pictures on our day off. They have things like news, and horse racing, then a story . I like the stories best. The other day we saw Catch the Kid, about a little boy who gets into all sorts of scrapes. I laughed a lot.
If someone was to play you in a movie who would it be? OR what would be the character you would want to be in a book?
We don’t really have movie stars. But I did see Florence Lawrence in the Girl and the Outlaw. You probably never heard of her. But she’s really a big deal. Now, that was exciting.
What is your ideal evening?
Well, I’m not really one to sit around and do nothing. I’d rather be out helping my mistress bring criminals to justice. And I really like the times when her mysterious counterpart—we call him Mr. X because we don’t know his name—is there to make things more exciting.
