JJ McGregor and the Pismawallops PTA are back in action! JJ has a new job at the library, which allows her to pay her bills. That ought to make her happy, but with all those books to shelve, the PTA to run, and a 16-year-old son to raise, there’s never enough time to spend with her sweetheart, police chief Ron Karlson. That’s especially true with Thanksgiving on the horizon and her mother coming to visit, not to mention the PTA’s Holiday Bazaar looming ahead.
The PTA has to swing into action in a hurry when a grumpy member of the school board threatens plans to build a badly-needed swimming pool on the island. His objections turn out to be nothing compared to the claims of a stranger who says the land the pool would be built on is actually hers. The board meeting dissolves into chaos, and JJ leaps into action in an effort to get to the bottom of the incipient land war.
Before JJ can find what she needs in the reference section, things turn deadly in the library stacks. Now JJ needs some answers fast, before she loses her job—or her life. She’s determined to find out everything about the victim, and for once the library doesn’t hold all the answers. JJ and Kitty may have to face the ultimate peril: a visit to Mrs. Halsey, the oldest—and crankiest—person on the island, where they may learn more than they bargained for.
An Interview With A Character
What is your full name?
Hi there. Thanks for having me visit. My name’s JJ MacGregor, and no, I’m not going to tell you what the initials stand for.
What is your Profession?
[Blushes a bit]. I’m trying to be a writer. It’s harder than it looks. To pay the bills, I’m working as many hours as I can get at my library, shelving books and that sort of thing. A long time ago I studied something useful in school—well, okay, it was accounting. It bored the boogers out of me and I’m never going to do that again. So I guess I’m a little short in the profession department.
What is your current favourite book or movie?
I’m usually pretty excited about whatever I’m currently reading. I love historical mysteries, and I read a lot of police procedurals. My secret vice is kind of bad fantasy novels—you know the ones, the kind where people are always making noble speeches and dramatic last stands. The ones that want to be Lord of the Rings.
What is your go to comfort book or movie?
My all-time favorite book is The Wind in the Willows. It just makes me want to go mess around on a river, even though I don’t really like boats that much. But the river in that story seems so peaceful, and the weather is good. The only thing wrong with Pismawallops Island, where I live, is that it rains a lot. Only in the rainy season, though. The rainy season runs from August 2 to July 31. The rest of the time it’s quite nice.
If someone was to play you in a movie who would it be? OR what would be the character you would want to be in a book?
Wow. I guess it would have to be... no, I can’t say about the movie. Someone way more glamorous than I am, of course, which wouldn’t be too hard. Or I could just crawl into a book and be, I don’t know, I guess Mole—you know, from The Wind in the Willows. Or maybe Hermione Granger. Really, most of the characters in books have a pretty hard time of it, so I’m not sure it would be great to be any of them. I mean, look what happens to characters like Anna Karinina or Juliet. Not my style.
What is your ideal evening?
Hot cocoa, cookies, and a good book. Or maybe [blushes again] watching a movie and eating ice cream with Ron. That’s Ron Karlson. He’s the head cop on the island, and my, um, my sweetheart. The best evenings are definitely ones when he’s at my house, and my teenaged son is at a friend’s house... and ice cream. Definitely ice cream, chocolate for sure, and Ron...
