When veterinarian and amateur naturalist Jasmine Garr is shot in her yard, residents of Shell Island press caterer River Holloway into investigating the homicide. River dons her amateur sleuth cap and sets out to discover who killed her former catering customer.
Between Jasmine’s estranged cousin, a rival veterinarian, a wild animal trapper, the chicken lady, and a real estate broker, River has plenty of suspects to consider. As she peels back the layers of Jasmine’s life, dangerous secrets come to light.
Jasmine’s orphaned kitty, Iris, along with River’s cat Major, and her husband Pete help River sift through the evidence. At the same time, River recently expanded her catering business. She must service her regular catering clients, plus provide fresh baked goods for Pete’s ice cream shop.
The killer follows River’s every move relishing the thought of another victim. Time is running out. Will River solve the murder before she becomes a cold dish?
An Interview With A Character
What is your full name?
River Holloway Merrick. I married my high school sweetheart a few months ago, so my last name is Merrick now. However, islanders have long known me as River Holloway and many call me by my maiden name.
What is your Profession?
I’m a caterer. My business is Holloway Catering, and I cater both casual and formal events, and everything in between. The key for customers is to call in early enough to reserve the date you want.
What is your current favourite book or movie?
I stay so much on the go that I don’t have time to read. If I try to read as I settle down in bed, my book or kindle inevitably flops down on my face or falls to the floor. Since cooking is my thing, I prefer Julie and Julia as my fav movie of all time. It’s a little dated in calendar years, but the story is so vivid and real for me, it feels fresh every time I watch it. Yes, I have my own copy of the movie.
What is your go to comfort book or movie?
I love Hallmark movies. Whenever it seems like nothing is going right, one of these feel-good pieces melts my heart and re-centers me so that all is right in my world.
If someone was to play you in a movie who would it be? OR what would be the character you would want to be in a book?
That’s easy. I wouldn’t dream of playing Meryl Streep’s role if they did a remake of Julie and Julia, but I’d love to play Julie. I don’t see myself as a superstar. I’m more suited for the everywoman role.
What is your ideal evening?
My ideal evening is cooking at home with family and friends. We have a large deck out back and tons of privacy so our place is especially suited for small gatherings.
