Can one girl banish evil?
Margaret, a girl born with second sight, has the unique ability to bring ghosts trapped between Heaven and Hell back to life. When her parents die suddenly, she goes to live with her beloved grandfather but the cellar of her grandfather’s ancient inn is haunted by an evil spirit of its own.
In the town of Bungay, a black dog wanders the streets, enslaving the ghosts of those who have died unnatural deaths. When Margaret arrives, these phantoms congregate at the inn, hoping she can free them from the clutches of Hugh Bigod, the 12th century ghost who has drawn them away from Heaven’s White Light in his canine guise.
With the help of her grandfather and the spirits she has befriended, Margaret sets out to defeat Hugh Bigod, only to discover he wants to use her for his own ends – to take over Hell itself.
A clever melding of fiction and historical facts.
An Interview With A Character
What is your full name?
My name is Margaret Phillips
What is your Profession?
I am a sixteen-year-old schoolgirl. I have recently moved to Bungay, Suffolk to live in the inn owned by my grandfather. My parents were both killed in a car accident and it was decided that I should rather live with Grandfather in my mother’s hometown than stay in Whitstable with my aunt and cousin. I am academic and achieve high marks at school especially in my favourite subjects of history and English.
What is your current favourite book or movie?
I am currently reading The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane. I am interested in historical novels and read a lot of classic books. I am studying Advanced English at school and we are expected to read twelve classic books this year as well as ten plays and watch ten movies.
What is your go to comfort book or movie?
I don’t watch a lot of movies, but I do enjoy books. My favourite book is Emily of New Moon by LM Montgomery. This has always been my favourite book and is about a young girl who is orphaned and goes to live with her two aunts and an uncle, none of who are married. Her Aunt Elizabeth is strict and inflexible in her approach to childcare and life in general. Emily is creative and enjoys reading and writing, just like I do. I always felt I could relate to her although I didn’t expect to end up an orphan like her.
If someone was to play you in a movie who would it be? OR what would be the character you would want to be in a book?
Hmmm, that is a difficult question. I can’t think of anyone I would want to play me in a movie. If I could be a character in a book, then I would choose Alice in Wonderland. I really loved some of the strange adventures Alice had in the book, in particular the caucus race and going to the tea party with the Mad Hatter and the March Hare. I loved the idea of the caucus race so much when my mother read me this book as a child, she created my own one with stuffed toys laid out in a circle. There was a stuffed lion, an old teddy bear that had survived a fire, a bunny rabbit, a reindeer my dad bought for me when he travelled to Finland on business and some other toys.
I also always loved the Mad Hatter. When we had to dress up for World Literacy Day at school when I was younger, my mother and I made a Mad Hatter hat out of cardboard. My mother showed me how to draw the shapes to make the top hat and glue them together. We decorated the hat with teacups and a large fat teapot like the one in the movie of Beauty and the Beast.
What is your ideal evening?
I enjoy going out with my friends. Our favourite relaxation during the day is to go on a picnic in the park. I haven’t done that since I moved to Bungay as I am the new girl at my school and haven’t had time to make a good friend yet. I have missed some school due to being injured in a car accident and I was also kidnapped.
If I am on my own at home, I like nothing better than to curl up with a good book.
